The Science of Tae Kwon Do
Power Theory
The average person uses only 10 to 20 percent of his physical potential,
however through Tae Kwon Do training one can learn to generate great speed
and power. This is accomplished by coordinating all the essential elements
of force. The elements of force are Reaction Force, Concentration Equilibrium,
Breath Control, and Speed.
Power Formula
F=MV2/2 (F=MA)
(F-Force)
(M-Mass)
(V-Velocity)
(A-Acceleration)
The foundations of Power are as follows:
Reaction Force
If your opponent is rushing towards you at high speed, the force generated
by the speed of your counter blow combined with the force of the attack
will tremendously increase the overall impact of the counter blow.
Concentration
By focusing power onto the smallest target area, it will concentrate the
force therefore increasing the effect of the blow. It is important that
you should unleash your strength at the beginning and gradually at a particular
point of contact on your target. The shorter the time of concentration
the greater the force or power of the blow.
Equilibrium
In Tae Kwon Do, balance is extremely important. By keeping the body well
balanced, a blow will be much more effective. Stances should always be
stable yet flexible for both offensive and defensive purposes.
Breath Control
Speed is the most essential factor of force, the other factors contribute
to speed and all must be coordinated to attain maximum efficiency. It
is important to always relax and execute techniques with speed.
Mass
Mathematically, the maximum kinetic energy or lore is obtained from maximum
body weight and speed. It is important that the body weight be increased
during the execution of a blow. Maximum body weight is applied with the
motion of turning the hip and by using the springing action of the joints.
